Nach 40 Minuten Fahrt und Tiefschlaf, kamen wir an unserem zweiten Tagesziel an: Noboribetsu.
Begrüßt wurden wir von einer scheinbar hungrigen Katze, die offenbar sah, wie wir Lebkuchen aßen und keine Sekunde von uns abließ und mir hartnäckig ins Ohr brüllte. Wir flohen in den Bus und fuhren in die Spa-Region. Hier gab es ein Onsen (öffentliches Bad) am anderen, sodass die meisten Menschen in Morgenrock und Badelatschen auf den Straßen unterwegs waren. Nach wenigen Metern kamen wir an – im Hell Valley! Und dieser Ort muss aus der Hölle entstanden sein. Überall brodelten Schwefelseen in Vulkankratern vor sich hin und nach faulen Eiern stinkende Flüsse bahnten sich ihren Weg durch die karge Landschaft. Der Gestank war unausstehlich und ich befürchtete, mir jeden Moment den Lebkuchen nochmal durch den Kopf gehen zu lassen. Doch wir hielten durch, absolvierten den Rundweg, schossen Bilder und machten uns auf zum Höhepunkt des Abends.
Wie sollte es anders sein, begann auch dieser mir dem Aufstieg auf den Vulkan, vorbei an noch mehr Schwefelseen, durch dichten Wald. Wir gingen den Fluss entlang, bis wir die Stelle fanden, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit im Internet auf sich gezogen hatte: direkt am Fluss lag ein Steg, auf den man sich setzen und seine Füße in das schwefelgraue und leicht atomare Wasser halten kann. Dies soll angeblich gesund sein und ich kann nur bestätigen, dass die etwa 30 °C warme Brühe gut tat. Nach einer ausgiebigen Pause marschierten wir den ganzen Weg zurück, kauften noch ein kleines Geschenk für unseren Hostelvati und fuhren mit dem allerletzten Zug nach Hause. Da 23.00 Uhr die letzte Bahn schon durch war, orderten wir ein Taxi und beschäftigten sowohl den Fahrer als auch die über das Walky Talky verbundene Zentrale mit der Auffindung unseres zu Hauses, denn in Japan versagen selbst Navis bei den komplizierten Adressen.
