Viele viele Jahre haben wir uns innerlich gewehrt, nach Himeji zu fahren. Das hat vorwiegend damit zu tun, dass es eins der Top fünf Sehenswürdigkeiten aus Tokyo und Umgebung ist und von Touristen fröhlich überschwemmt wird. Fährt man in einem überfüllten Zug, so ist dieser nach der Station Himeji schlagartig leer. Mit Massentourismus haben wir schon einige schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht und das stellten wir uns als größte Herausforderung vor.
Dieses Jahr wollten wir es jedoch wagen, hatten wir die hübsche Burg schon so oft aus dem Zug heraus gesehen und von verschiedenen Quellen gehört, wie schön es in der Stadt sein soll. Unsere diesjährige Reisezeit außerhalb der Saison spielte uns blendend in die Karten, denn bis auf wenige Ausnahmen gab es kaum Touristen. Wir verbrachten einen unerwartet entspannten Tag und bereuten unsere Entscheidung keineswegs.
Wir starten mit der Busfahrt Richtung Seilbahn und fuhren zunächst hoch hinauf. Mit Bambus Wanderstöcken ausgerüstet gingen wir einen etwa 20 minütigen Marsch durch den Wald, bis wir am ersten Tempel, dem Maniden ankamen. Majestätisch thronte er auf einer Anhöhe über uns, das alte Holz von der Sonne beschienen. Wir kehrten jedoch vor unserem Aufstieg noch einmal kurz in einem kleinen traditionellen Nudelrestaurant ein und nahmen ein Mittagessen inklusive Eis zu uns.
Die Tempel sind alle von einer außergewöhnlichen Atmosphäre umgeben- in ihrer gigantischen Bauweise ragen sie in den Himmel, es duftet nach Räucherstäbchen, Menschen ziehen sich zum beten zurück und hin und wieder läuft man einem bescheiden lächelnden Mönch über den Weg. Noch imposanter war der Daikodo Tempel mit seinem geräumigen Vorplatz, der auch in verschiedenen Filmen (the last samurai) als Kulisse diente.
Gemütlich liefen wir bis zur Seilbahnstation zurück und fuhren mit dem Bus wieder ins Stadtzentrum, stiegen diesmal aber ein paar Haltestellen vorm Bahnhof am Himeji Castle aus. Wir schauten uns das Schloss von außen aus der Nähe an.
Danach machten wir uns mit einer längeren Zugfahrt zu unserer jetzt schon vorletzten Unterkunft auf. Wir übernachten für die nächsten drei Nächte bei Mayumi, unsere Hostelbetreiberin, welche uns vom kleinen Bahnhof abholte. Den Abend verbrachten wir gemeinsam mit einem aufgeschlossen und witzigen amerikanischen Spieleentwickler, der in Korea lebt.
