Obwohl viel Regen gemeldet war, begann unser Tag mit teils blauen Himmel und Sonnenschein. Mit dem Touristenbus fuhren wir zunächst auf ein Observationsdeck, von dem aus man den Vulkan auf Sakurajima besonders gut sehen kann.

Dann ging es weiter zum Hafen, wo wir zu einer viertelstündigen Fahrt mit der Fähre ablegten. Die hatte zwei Decks, die für Autos reserviert waren, ein Deck, das geschlossen und mit vielen Sitzen ausgestattet war und das oberste, offene Decke, für welches wir uns entschieden. Selbst wenn die Fähre von unserem Zwei-Tages-Pass abgedeckt wurde, wäre ein Fahrpreis von unter 1,50 € mehr als vertretbar gewesen.

Die Touristeninformation der Insel bot an, sich ein Set, bestehend aus einem Handtuch, einer Schaufel und einer Karte, auszuleihen, mit welchem man sich am Strand ein Loch für ein warmes Fußbad schaufeln kann.
Dies ging jedoch wegen des heutigen Wasserstandes nicht, sodass wir unsere Füße erst einmal in das angrenzende Fußbad hängten, welches als das längste von Japan beworben wurde. Leider ging starker Wind und es dauerte nicht lang bis wir froren.

Aus einem Körbchen mit einer Kasse des Vertrauens nahmen wir für weniger als einen Euro einen Beutel Mandarinen mit, für die die Insel neben Rettichanbau bekannt ist.

Mit dem Bus fuhren wir verschiedene Aussichtspunkte an, aßen das für hier typische Eis (klein gehacktes Wassereis mit süßer Milch und Früchten) und stiegen am Hafen aus, um mit der Fähre zurück nach Kagoshima zu fahren.

Dort liefen wir auf der Suche nach etwas Essbaren durch die große Einkaufsstraße, Tenmonkan.
Dort gab es unter anderem ein Capsule Cafe – ein Laden, der nur, wirklich nur, aus kleinen Automaten, wir wir sie auch kennen, besteht, die unter Einwurf von Münzen Plastikeier ausspucken, in denen das verrückteste Zeug ist.

Abends aßen wir in einer Soba Bar (Soba sind Instantnudeln, die mit verschiedensten Zutaten zu einer Suppe verarbeitet werden) und staunten nicht schlecht, als der Weihnachtsmarkt geöffnet hatte.
In vielen kleinen Buden standen zum Teil vier Verkäufer und boten ihre Ware an.
Neben verschiedenem Essen gab es Glühwein, Holzkunst aus dem Erzgebirge und sogar ein Begrüßungsschild auf deutsch und in Umgangssprache mit den Worten: „Willkommen aufm Weihnachtsmarkt“

Entdeckung des Tages jedoch war für mich das Hostel-Axolotl, welches ich im Aufenthaltsraum fand. In einem Aquarium neben einem großen Fischglas sitzt es und schaut neugierig dem Hosteltreiben zu. Ich werde Axel vermissen, wenn wir weiterreisen….
