Nach Aoshima fuhren wir mit einem recht alten Zug, welcher statt einer Klimaanlage drei Ventilatoren im Abteil bot. Die Stadt selbst war in den 80er Jahren wohl ein riesiger Touristenspot gewesen. Später wurde der Anziehungspunkt dann durch die Urlaubsinsel Okinawa abgelöst, sodass man jetzt den früheren Glanz von Aoshima noch erahnen kann, allerdings der Zustand der Straßen und Gebäude eher an eine Geisterstadt erinnert. Allerdings hatten sich hier zwei Amerikaner niedergelassen, die nun einen Rikschabetrieb führten und sich freuten, uns beiden „white people“ zu sehen.

Der Weg zum Strand war gesäumt mit Geschäften, die Badereifen, Surfbretter und Eis mit Mango- oder Schrimpgeschmack verkauften. Typischerweise begann es genau da zu regnen, als wir den Strand erreichten und einen Fuß auf die Brücke setzen wollten, die uns auf die Insel bringen sollte. Überall vom Ufer aus konnte man des Teufels Waschbrett sehen – vom Meer rillenartig geformte Steine, die tatsächlich an ein Waschbrett erinnern. Ich konnte am Strand gar nicht aufhören, Muscheln zu sammeln, da ich nie in meinem Leben schon mal so große und hübsche Exemplare gefunden habe. In der Inselmitte kann man den im Dschungel befindlichen Schrein erreichen und besichtigen. Nach einer Erholzeit im Hotelzimmer trafen wir uns 18.00 mit Mitsu und Tomo vorm Hotel, um gemeinsam essen zu gehen. Das Restaurant befand sich im Keller eines Hauses und gleich nach dem Eintreten zieht man seine Schuhe aus und schließt sie in eines der unzähligen und dafür vorgesehen Schließfächer ein. Zum Tisch steigt man dann noch eine Stufe nach unten, sodass der Kellner sich knien muss, um die Bestellung aufzunehmen. Dieser kommt im Übrigen sehr zuverlässig, wenn man die Funkklingel auf dem Tisch betätigt. Das Essen selbst war wie erwartet wieder unglaublich lecker: roher Thunfisch, Hühnerbällchen, Hühnerflügel am Spieß, Salat mit Meeresfrüchten und rohen Amber Jack, wobei wir bis jetzt noch nicht wissen, was das so wirklich war. Ich tippe auf irgendetwas aus dem Meer. Am späten Abend trafen wir auf einige von Mitsus und Tomos Studienkollegen, welche allesamt sehr angeheitert und umso lustiger waren.
