Zuerst waren wir ohne Hoffnung, überhaupt unsere Tagesreise antereten zu können, da unser Geld für den ziemlich teueren Bus nicht gereicht hätte und die Lawsonsgeldautomaten neuerdings kein Geld mehr an ausländische Kunden auszahlt. Unsere einzige wirkliche Hoffnung war also die große Postzerntrale, die noch geschlossen hatte, als wir sie endlich fanden. Wir schlugen die Zeit bis zur Öffnung durch einen Spaziergang tot und waren mehr als nur glücklich, als der Automat tatsächlich Scheine ausspuckte. So konnten wir doch unseren Plan verwirklichen und zum Akansee fahren. Zwei ganze Stunden dauerte die Busfahrt, bei welcher wir ungewohnt viel Natur des rauen Nordens und selbst Kühe und Ponys sahen, wie Sie auf den Feldern weideten.
Das Areal um den See herum schloss unzählige Hotels, Restaurants, Läden mit geschnitzter Kunst und verschiedene Aktivitätsangebote wie Tretbotfahren, surfen oder wandern ein. Um uns einen Überblick zu verschaffen setzten wir uns an den Pier und berachteten die Karte, während eine Herde Enten unbeeindruckt direkt neben uns saß und sich geduldig fotografieren lies. Die Entscheidung war gefallen: zuerst wollten wir die eigentliche Attraktion – die Marimos sehen! Die Auswahl bestand zwischen einer kurzweiligen aber teueren Speedboatfahrt oder einer längeren Dampferfahrt. Wir wählten letzteres und pünktlich 13:00 legte unser Boot ab. Für die Fahrt wurde mit unberührter Natur geworben und wahrlich sahen wir ausschließlich unbebautes, naturbelassenes Ufer und türkis schimmerndes, sauberes Wasser. Wir stoppten auf einer kleinen Insel mit einem Aussichtspunkt und einem Aquarium, in welchem einige der originalen Algenkugeln zu sehen sein sollten. Die Massen drängten sich mit Foto- und Videogeräten an den verschiedenen Aquarien vorbei, welche dem See nachempfunden waren und unterschiedlich große Marimos beherbergt.
Auf dem Rückweg bog das Boot in einen langen Seearm ein und präsentierte nochmals die volle Bandbreite an Natur.
Nach dem Anlegen liefen wir eine zeitlang durch den angrenzendes Wald, immer dicht am Ufer des Flusses. Am Ende des Weges wartete blubbernd eine heiße Schwefelquelle auf uns. Wir machten zwei, drei Bilder und verschwanden dann ganz schnell wieder, da der Gestank unerträglich war. Um uns auszuruhen baumelten wir unsere Füße in ein Freiluftfußbad mit extrem heißen Bergwasser- Nach einem kurzen Gespräch mit einem interessierten, einheimischen Pärchen zogen wir weiter zum Souveniershop, kauften uns zwei Murmelalgen inklusive Transportgefäß, aßen ein unglaublich leckeres Pfirsichsoftteis (mit echten Fruchtstücken…lecker!) und schauten uns die vielen verschiedenenen Schnitzereien in der Ladenstraße an. Wir ließen den Tag so ausklingen wie wir ihn begonnen hatten – am See sitzend (diesmal bei Dämmerung um 17:00) und fuhren letzendlich mit dem Bus zurück in die Heimat nach Kushiro.
